Our Mission.

"The Huntington Beach Fire Department is dedicated to providing the highest quality fire, marine safety and emergency medical services to protect our community. "

The HBFD - Marine Safety Division is an all-risk department that serves its community with a 200-person seasonal staff and 18 full-time staff—covering 4 Divisions that make up the 5 miles of Huntington Beach coastline and the Huntington Harbor. Huntington Beach Lifeguards respond to 3k+ rescues every year along with boat rescues, dive responses, medical aids, and various community involvement programs. Huntington Beach Lifeguards also run the HB Junior Lifeguard program which has a long history of creating future leaders in our community.

Steps to become an Ocean Lifeguard.

We are actively recruiting for our 2024 Lifeguard Season!

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum Age: 17 by July 1, 2024 - Proof required  (Age 16 for HB City Beach Junior Lifeguards and with recommendation by MS Management)

  • Vision: 20/40 uncorrected in both eyes or 20/40 corrected (by contacts only) in both eyes.

  • License: A valid CA drivers license with an acceptable driving record may be required.

  • Other: A pre-placement medical exam and drug screening will be conducted upon a conditional offer of employment.

Complete Our Performance Exam

Upcoming Performance Exam Dates: November 24 & 25, 2023;  January 5, 2024; and February 3, 2024

Complete our performance exam:

  • 1000-yard pool swim that must be completed in under 15 minutes

  • 1800-yard ocean Run-Swim-Run

Interview

We are looking for applicants who display good character, integrity, and strong work ethic in a team environment.

Come prepared as you would for any professional interview.

Lifeguard Academy

  1. Ocean Lifeguard Trainees will be trained on First Aid, Ocean Rescue, CPR, Paddleboard Operations, Rescue Boat Operations, RWC Operations.

  2. Ocean Lifeguard Trainees will be paid during training and will be provided all necessary equipment. 

  3. Upon completion of the the Training Academy, Ocean Lifeguard Trainees will become an Ocean Lifeguard I, and serve our community during the summer season.
