Tryout Information

The Junior Lifeguard Tryout is a multi-event test that tests the swimming ability, endurance, and confidence of a prospective junior lifeguard participant. This passing of the junior lifeguard swim test is a requirement prior to enrollment in the HBFD Junior Lifeguard program. This is usually performed around April and May prior to the start of the Junior Lifeguard Program.

General Tryout Information

The HBFD Junior Lifeguard Tryouts is made up of three separate events. Performed in the following order.

1. A 100-yard swim (50 Yards for Sand Crabs)

2. A treading water test

3. Underwater swim test

The Requirements to pass are as follows:

"A", "B", & "C" Divisions:

  • Swim 100 yards at or under one minute and 50 seconds

  • Tread water for five minutes 

  • Swim underwater for 10 yards 

"Sand Crab" Division:

  • Swim 50 yards at or under one minute and 15 seconds

  • Tread water for 2 minutes 

  • Swim underwater for 5 yards

What to bring:

  • Swimsuit

  • Towel

  • Goggles (optional but suggested)

  • Swimming Cap (optional but suggested)

Junior Lifeguard Tryouts

April 7    8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

April 14  8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

April 21  8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

April 28  8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Sand Crabs Tryouts

April 2    1 p.m. to 4:30 pm.

April 16  1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Create an account on HB Sands to access the programming available

through HB Community & Library Services, including HBJGs and MSE classes.

Important Dates:

January 8 - first day to register for an April tryout

February 1-15 - returning HBJG registration opens

May 20 - registration closes for HBJGs
