Hi everyone,

Registration for this summer’s Modified Junior Lifeguard Program will open tomorrow night (Friday, June 12, 2020) at midnight (beginning of June 13th).  Registration will be for returning junior lifeguards only.  As you know, the AM sessions will fill up fast and there are limited spots available as junior lifeguards that registered in March have been given priority.

If you do not get into the session of your choice, you may be placed on a waiting list in the order that you have registered.  Unfortunately, you will need to pay your registration to be placed on the list but you will receive a full refund if we are unable to accommodate you.

Registration instructions are listed below.

*If you have any problems or questions, please do not call any of the City’s Community Centers, they do not have information about our registration process.  Respond to this email if you have any questions or call Kyle Morita at 714 375-5075.

To begin registration, follow these steps:

1. Go to the following website:  www.hbsands.org

2. All returning junior lifeguard families have a household account that you set up last year that you will need to login at.

3. Once you’ve logged on, find the Junior Lifeguard Registration Class Activity Number.  There are a few ways to do this.  You can search for the class by clicking on the “Search Programs” button.  The activity number to register is 900001 and the age of your junior lifeguard and the session time (AM or PM) will determine the section number that you sign up for.

4. The following is a list of the different section numbers for the different groups:

Activity Numbers:

900001-A1 for AM “A” Group Age 14-17

900001-A2 for PM “A” Group Age 14-17

900001-B1 for AM “B” Group Age 12-13

900001-B2 for PM “B” Group Age 12-13

900001-C1 for AM “C” Group Age 9-11

900001-C2 for PM “C” Group Age 9-11

5. Once you’ve found the section that you’d like to enroll in, click on the shopping cart icon next to it.  Note – you may only enroll in the section that matches your child’s age as of July 1st.

6. Next, click on the “Enroll Now” button that pops up at the bottom of the page.

7. Next, select who you are enrolling into the section by clicking on the box with their name.  Click “Add to cart”.

8. Carefully read the Activity Waiver which includes release and hold harmless and photography waivers and click on the agree button.  There will also be waivers specific to COVID 19 that you will need to sign at a later date.

9. You must answer the next questions to provide us with two emergency contacts other than yourself.

10. The next page will begin your check out.  You’ll need to change the “Credit Card Type” to “Visa/Mastercard/Discover”, then “Continue”.

11. Next, fill out your credit card information and “Submit Payment”.

12. Congratulations!  You’ve successfully completed online registration.  You may print out your own confirmation receipt and it will also show in your shopping history that you are now enrolled in both 900000-00 (JG Tryouts) and 900001 (JG Registration).

Hello Junior Lifeguard Families!

We've received the following good news from our fire chief regarding options for our Program this summer. Stay tuned for additional information regarding registration and new junior lifeguard guidelines.


  • The Junior Guards program will be 6 weeks for the 2020 year only. To accommodate the smaller class sizes and to provide for the PPE, Sanitizer, and portable restrooms the cost of the program will remain at $605 HB resident and $630 non-resident.

  • The Junior Guards program will adhere to the California Department of Public Health Day Camp Guidelines.

  • The program will be limited to returning students only and limited to the number of participants in order to maintain a 12 to 1 student to instructor ratio. Priority will be given to those who have already registered.

  • • If space is available in the C division, last year’s Sand Crabs who have aged up to the C division will be given an opportunity to try out and register.

  • The Sand Crab Program will be suspended until 2021.

  • Detailed information regarding daily procedures and health requirements will be provided to parents via email and the Junior Guards website prior to the start of the camp.

  • Parents will be asked to conduct a Daily Health Screen of participant children each day of camp. All staff will also health screen each day. Further details regarding the health screen will be provided to parents via email.

  • Participants will have a mandatory temperature check conducted with a non-touch thermal thermometer at check-in each day. Those with a temperature of 100.0 Fahrenheit or greater will not be allowed to participate that day and will need to follow up with a staff supervisor for further direction.

  • Staff will be trained on observing for signs of illness in participants. If a participant appears to become ill during the camp, the participant will be evaluated by staff to determine if the participant needs to be removed from activities and have a parent or guardian notified.

  • Participants will be provided with a reusable/washable face cover as part of their Junior Guards uniform. Participants will also need to bring a personal bottle of hand sanitizer, containing at least 60% ethyl alcohol, with them each day. Staff will conduct checks to ensure all participants have the required items at check in each morning.

  • Face covers will need to be worn at certain times based on our efforts to comply with appropriate social distancing requirements. We will make every effort to keep the need for face covers to an absolute minimum, however, there will be times when they will be required.

  • Portable hand washing/sanitizer stations will be available for staff and participants to use as needed. Portable Restrooms will be brought in for the specific use of the Junior Guard program only. Portable restrooms will be cleaned daily and secured after the program (no public use will be permitted).

  • Groups (A, B, C’s) will have different drop off and pick up areas at our designated beach locations to prevent co-mingling of participants and to maintain social distancing. Parents and family members will not be allowed into the Junior Guards camp area at any time.

  • Students will need to bring their own bottle of water and snack each day. The concession stand will be off-limits during the program due to social distancing requirements.

  • The curriculum is currently being constructed and reviewed by staff members. The curriculum will follow current California Department of Public Health recommendations and guidelines. The curriculum will be modified from previous years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, but will still provide for a great experience for participants.

  • Participants and staff members will adhere to social distancing guidelines during the duration of the camp.

  • Participants repeatedly not adhering to the established guidelines and protocols may be dismissed from the program for the remainder of the season.

  • The overall goal for the Junior Guards program is to provide a safe and fun learning environment for all participants. While this summer’s program will be modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the safety and health of participants and staff is the top priority.
